Although working in an explosive environment sounds dramatic, everywhere from paint spraying workshops to joinery workshops classify as an explosive atmosphere. An explosive environment is defined as ‘ a mixture of dangerous gases, vapours, mists or dust in which, after ignition has occurred, combustion spreads through to the entire unburned mix’ These environments fall under ATEX legislation, which is the name most commonly given to the two European directives on explosive atmospheres.
